Broken Shell

Material: Cherry

45cm x 25cm

Inspired by finding a broken shell near Niarbyl, this was interesting to carve and very difficult to hold whilst doing so, due to its shape. When finally oiled and polished, the wood became a wonderful shade and displayed its grain beautifully.

This piece was part-carved, and then left for 18 months, during which time a large crack appeared (a tendency with drying).

Rather than try to disguise this, I filled it with a metalic blue resin compound to make a complete contrast. This piece turned out to be one of the most tactile I have ever made.
